Italian Meatball Vessel or Meat Bolle Vase

2005

Blown glass, charred Italian meatball, grease

10”H x 6”W x 5”D

This is an attempt to copy a famous Italian vase The Bolle Vase, designed by Finnish Designer Tapio Wirkkala for Venini in 1966. In this attempt, molten glass encapsulated an Italian meatball. The pressure of the cooking meatball caused the molten glass to inflate until the desired shape was achieved, at which point pressure was released and the vessel was annealed.
