Launch
Over the Canal
2005
Event
An impossible task of launching a hot-air balloon over the canal was
proposed to a team of assistants. The heat source was to be a small
crucible of molten glass with a hole in the bottom. It was the coldest
day of the season. The glass was melted in a converted household microwave
oven and held approximately one cup of molten glass. The team worked
haphazardly to inflate the balloon in bone-chilling windy conditions
while the microwave was busy melting the glass. When the microwave dinged
the crucible was pulled out, attached to the balloon and set free only
to instantly fall into the canal. A fleeting glow of orange momentarily
graced the scene before it faded from view on the bottom of the canal
in the cold water.
