Ode to the Horizon

2017

Project commissioned for the book Wonder: 50 Years RISD Glass (pg. 50-57)

Dimensions variable

The earth curves approximately .00000024 inches over the span of one foot. The vessel that best approximates this line is a cylinder. I made a one-foot long cylinder, converted it into a custom phonograph and, recorded in pen, the vibrations of my voice yelling the word “Horizon.” The word “Horizon” appears eighteen times throughout the novel Moby Dick by Herman Melville. The cylinder was formed by the pages of the book Moby Dick which had the word Horizon on them. The novel Moby Dick and Thomas Edison’s first phonograph each debuted during the second half of the nineteenth century.
